What is the HD Meetup lab?

Who we are and what we do?

Humanitarian Designers (HD) is dedicated to building bridges between aid workers and designers. We are a community of leaners, practitioners and allies. Our mission is to raise awareness and educate, creating a space for collaboration and shared knowledge.

What is the reason for this event?

This online community allows people around the world to connect with peers. However, past projects showed us how much in-person interactions have a unique and meaningful value. Therefore, we want to create an opportunity for aid workers and designers to gather in person.

We will meet on September 23-25, at Ideasquare in Geneva for a 3 day creative lab. We provide the space, the frame, and the accommodation, you come with your experiences, ideas, and challenges.

Registration are now closed.

Where will it take place?

To make this event happen, HD works hand in hand with IdeaSquare:

IdeaSquare is the innovation space at CERN using collaborative methodologies, access to CERN expertise and cross-connectivity to ideate solutions for the future of humankind.”

Their team hosts a range of activities and events, proposing a fertile environment for the development and implementation of ideas that serve both scientific and community needs.

Their co-working space offers meetings rooms, private nooks, prototyping labs, a welcoming kitchen, and a double decker bus where we will be at our ease for connecting and experimenting.

Hotel rooms within the CERN facility will be provided and paid for by Humanitarian Designers.

What will be the Agenda?

During these 3 days, facilitators will guide engaging discussions, and collective efforts, inviting participants to address humanitarian and designers collaboration challenges. Expect to delve into topics close to our values like community-driven projects, ethical practices, social innovation, sustainability, decolonialism, …

The goal is to add bricks of knowledge and create blueprints for future collaborations. The last afternoon will be dedicated to transforming ideas and connections into tangible future projects for Humanitarian Designers.

What is the date and the address?

The event will be in-person in CERN Ideasquare from Monday 23rd to Wednesday 25th of September 2024.

Yes the participation is free of charge. Our aim is to gather the community in-person, so we are also paying for the hotel, snacks, one dinner, and a tram ticket for visiting Geneva.

The hotel is at a walking distance from the CERN facility. Participants will have one single bedroom per person. The booking is for Monday and Tuesday nights. If you wish to arrive on Sunday or leave on Thursday, you will have to find your accommodation.

  • Accommodation within the CERN facility for two nights.
  • One diner at the lake on Tuesday evening.
  • Tram tickets for visiting a known organisation.

Participants will have to book their own round trip to Geneva. They will also have to pay for their food. The CERN facility do provide a large cafeteria with menu for around 10-14€. Ideasquare do have a comfortable kitchen, so participants are also invited to prepare their own meals. More information will be shared to participants.

As a grassroots NGO, we have put 1/3 of our budget to pay for the participants’ accommodations to ensure that everyone could afford joining. Even if it’s an assumed decision by our team, it puts a lot of stress on our finance. Therefore, we want to make sure that participants won’t cancel last-minute.

Yes, you can contact us on our email address.
